Exercise in Advancing Forward by Moll Brau
In Brau’s words, “On June 23rd 2021 I undertook the arduous task of digging a grave. It took me over 19 hours, I went through over four gallons of water and sweat soaked completely through my clothes. I took a few bathroom breaks and ate an apple. The soil was so densely riddled with rocks that right away it became clear that my shovel was useless and I would have to use a pick axe to dig. Before my exercise I had wondered what I would think about and if anything profound would happen to me.”
Role: Casey compiled 19 hours of video footage into an 11 minute video piece to support Brau’s concept and vision. The video editing style was designed specific for the projection installation at her solo exhibition “Hokey Pokey”. At times the video work appears broken into 2 separate outputs always reuniting as one concise piece. The wiring for the projection equipment was covered in a stream of soil from Brau’s dig. The time based work was displayed between paintings and across from a “living sculpture” scene in image.
